During 2016, we were commissioned to carry out a watching brief on land near to Portal Road, Monmouthshire, South Wales related to the development of a new Premier Inn. The town of Monmouth has its origins in the early Roman period with the construction of a fort in circa 55AD. Identified by name as ‘Blestium’, it was one of several forts forming a line of auxiliary fortifications established to control the Monow Valley into mid-Wales.
